In 1968, the Halton Union
Farmers Mutual, (est. 1858), the Puslinch Mutual (est. 1859) and
the Eramosa Mutual (est. 1861) companies merged. As the majority
of business for the three companies was in Halton
and Wellington Counties, the newly established company
was called Halwell Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
The manager of the Eramosa Mutual, Max Forsythe, became the Halwell
Mutual's first manager.
The Halwell Mutual Fire Insurance Company's office was located
on Woolwich Street in downtown Guelph.
In 1976, the Halwell Mutual purchased property at the north end
of Guelph, known as the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO)
building. Renovations were completed to the main floor and the
Halwell Mutual opened at this site in 1977.
By 1992, the Halwell Mutual had outgrown its confines and extensive
renovations were again commenced. The 2,500 sq. ft. addition brought
the office space to a total of 4,300 sq. ft. The storage area
downstairs was converted into a large meeting room which is used
by local service clubs for meetings.
To maintain the history of the building, the remainder of the
downstairs area was left as original, including the bomb shelter,
meeting room, blackboards and strategical maps on the walls.
Halwell Mutual has a 9 member Board
of Directors, all of which are policyholders living in the
area. At present, the company has 14
full time employees.
Halwell Mutual Insurance Company is a member of the Ontario
Mutual Insurance Association. Employees attend courses and
seminars at the OMIA office in Cambridge to ensure they are kept
up-to-date on insurance products available to the policyholder.
The company now has assets of over 34 million dollars and is
licensed to write property, commercial, liability and automobile
insurance.
